The Cook memorial
At the eastern end of Cooks Beach (near the Purangi River) the Cook Memorial marks the site where Captain Cook observed the transit of Mercury in 1769. This dune also protects significant Council infrastructure.
The grassed reserve has suffered erosion over the years. While natural, and part of dynamic shoreline fluctuations, this erosion caused widespread concern.
Following a planting project in 2016 a series of storms in late 2017 and early 2018 caused significant damage to the work undertaken.
Council then formulated a plan to repair the damage and following significant reshaping of the dune organised a wonderful planting day on the 08/08/2020. Together with Council, volunteers from the community and the Cooks Beachcare Group planted thousands of dune plants before a well earned barbeque lunch.
