Who are the Cooks Beachcare Group?
  • We are local resident and ratepayer volunteers protecting our valuable dunes in conjunction with local and regional councils, DOC, and the local community.
  • There are Beachcare/Coast Care groups all over New Zealand with over a dozen on the Coromandel.

What do we do?
Replace invasive exotic weeds with naturally occurring native dune plants using:
  • weekly morning working bees (mainly weeding and rubbish removal).
  • planting days during Autumn and/or Spring.
  • Each year on average we contribute about 1,000 hours and plant over 4,000 native dune plants.

Why do we do this work?
Dunes planted in native plants help:
  • protect the dunes and repair storm damage
  • support our native birds, lizards, and insects

How can you help?

Plants and technical advice are supplied by Councils. Cooks Beachcare and the community supply the enthusiastic labour. And all work is done without significantly restricting views or beach access.

RESERVE PLANTING
In August the Beachcare Group and Whenuakite Country Kids joined forces to plant a dune near the Cooks Stream.
